Lithium extraction is detrimental to both the environment and surrounding communities. As extraction has increased due to a push for reliance on electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries, these detriments have been further exacerbated within these small, indigenous communities. Loss of vital resources such as water and environmental degradation and contamination have become prevalent in these areas. As lithium extraction continues, these areas are becoming less and less hospitable for these local populations.
This source is a trailer for a documentary that focuses on the impact that lithium extraction has on local communities as well as the indigenous response to perspective mining. This film was produced by Clemente Flores an indigenous man residing in the El Moreno community in northern Argentina. His piece interviews various people and leaders throughout these communities which offers unique perspectives on the environmental degradation, limited water access, and loss of culture that is caused by lithium extraction in these regions. This trailer emphasizes the belief of the indigenous people that these companies are exploiting them and the land without any real benefit to their communities.
